Listening Tips

How to Score Higher in IELTS Listening CBT

Expert strategies for the computer-based IELTS Listening test.

Read Ahead Before Audio Starts

In the IELTS CBT, you get reading time before each section. Use every second to read the questions, predict answer types (name, number, place) and underline keywords before the audio begins.

Spelling Must Be Exact

In the computer based IELTS listening test, one spelling mistake means a wrong answer. Listen carefully for spelled-out words and check your spelling during review time at the end of each section.

Keep Moving — Never Get Stuck

Audio does not stop. If you miss an answer, leave it and move on immediately. Coming back to missed questions is impossible once the audio has passed — always prioritise the next question.

Map & Diagram Questions

For map labelling, orient yourself with compass directions (North, left, right) before the audio starts. Listen for directional phrases like "turn left", "opposite" and "next to" — they signal the correct label.

Word Limits Are Strict

"Write no more than TWO words" means exactly that — three words = wrong. Articles (a, the) count as words. Numbers written as digits (e.g. 42) count as one word. Always check the instruction carefully.

Section 4 is Always Hardest

Section 4 is an academic monologue — no conversation, fastest speech, most complex vocabulary. Budget maximum focus here. Expect topic-specific terminology and longer gaps between answers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything students ask about IELTS Listening Computer Based Test

How is IELTS Listening different in the Computer Based Test?
In the IELTS Computer Based Listening test, you hear the audio once through headphones and type your answers directly on screen. The biggest difference from the paper test is that there is no separate 10-minute answer transfer time. You can change answers during the test but cannot replay the audio once it has passed.
How many sections are in the IELTS Listening test?
The IELTS Listening test has 4 sections with 10 questions each, totalling 40 questions. Section 1 — everyday social conversation. Section 2 — everyday social monologue. Section 3 — educational conversation. Section 4 — academic lecture. Difficulty increases from Section 1 to Section 4.
How long is the IELTS Listening test?
The IELTS Listening audio lasts approximately 30 minutes. In the paper-based test, candidates receive an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers. In the Computer Based Test (CBT), there is no transfer time — you type answers directly during the audio, so total time is approximately 30 minutes.
How is the IELTS Listening band score calculated?
Your IELTS Listening band score is based entirely on correct answers out of 40. There is no negative marking.
