GT Reading Tips

Tips for General Training Reading

Quick strategies to score higher in the IELTS CBT Reading test.

Section 1 — Scan Fast

Short factual texts like notices and ads. Don't read every word — scan for keywords matching the question. T/F/NG questions are common here.

Section 2 — Workplace Focus

Covers workplace texts — job descriptions, training guides and company policies. Read the introduction carefully as tricky details are often there.

Section 3 — Long Prose

Longer, more complex text. Skim for the main idea first, then read questions and scan for answers. Matching headings are common in Section 3.

Manage Your 60 Minutes

Spend around 20 minutes per section. If stuck, move on and come back — every question carries the same mark in the CBT format.

T/F/NG — Be Precise

"Not Given" means the information is absent from the text — not false. Never use outside knowledge. Stick strictly to what the passage says.

Spelling Counts in CBT

For fill-in-blank answers, spelling must be exact. Copy directly from the passage where possible — one spelling mistake means a wrong answer.

About Computer Based IELTS General Reading Tests

The IELTS Computer Based Test (CBT) is now the most common format offered by IDP and British Council worldwide. Unlike paper-based tests, the computer based IELTS reading module uses a split-screen layout — passage on the left, questions on the right, both panels scrolling independently. At computerielts.com, every General Training Reading test replicates this CBT IELTS interface exactly, so you practise in the same environment you will face on test day.

Our IELTS General Reading practice tests follow the official format: 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes. All CBT IELTS question types are covered — True/False/Not Given, matching headings, matching features, sentence completion, summary completion, short answer, and multiple choice. Each test is auto-scored with an instant band score upon submission. Start with General Reading Test 1 or explore our Academic Reading tests.
