A strict 20-minute countdown replicates real IELTS Academic CBT conditions with a live word counter tracking your 150-word minimum.
Every chart is rendered as a crisp SVG graphic — exactly like the real IELTS computer test screen. Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, tables, processes and maps.
The AI specifically checks for a separate overview paragraph — the most critical factor in Task Achievement. Missing one drops your score by a full band or more.
Your cited statistics are cross-checked against the chart data. Inaccurate data is flagged with correction — a common error that penalises even strong writers.
Overused or informal trend words are identified and replaced with precise academic alternatives: "went up" → "rose sharply", "stayed the same" → "remained stable".
Grammar errors shown side-by-side with corrections — tense, article, preposition, sentence structure — labelled by error type so you learn, not just correct.
A Band 9 quality opening and overview is generated for your exact chart — see the correct paraphrase, overview structure and academic vocabulary standard required.

Key strategies to improve your band score across all four criteria.
The overview is the most important paragraph in IELTS Academic Task 1. It must be a separate paragraph — usually the second — that summarises the 2–3 most significant overall trends without specific data. Examiners use the overview to judge your ability to select and report key information.
You are NOT expected to describe every data point. Select the most significant features — the highest, lowest, biggest change, most notable comparison — and group them logically. Listing all data without selection is a Band 5 response regardless of grammar quality.
Avoid vague words like "went up" or "got bigger". Use precise academic language: rose sharply, declined steadily, peaked at, fluctuated, remained relatively stable, experienced a dramatic increase. Pair trend verbs with adverbs (sharply, gradually, significantly) and always specify the period and the figures.
Follow this structure every time: Para 1 — Paraphrase the chart title. Para 2 — Overview (2 key trends, no data). Para 3 — Detail group 1 (with figures). Para 4 — Detail group 2 (with figures and comparisons). This structure alone can raise your Coherence score by a full band.
IELTS Academic Task 1 requires objective description only. Never write: "This is worrying", "I think this shows a problem", "The government should...". Your job is to report what the data shows — not to interpret it, judge it or recommend action based on it. Opinions always reduce your Task Achievement score.
Always reach 150 words minimum — going under incurs a Task Achievement penalty. The ideal range is 165–190 words. More than 200 words is risky: within 20 minutes, extra length almost always introduces grammar and coherence errors that reduce your overall score.
Everything students ask about IELTS Academic Writing Task 1
The IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 requires candidates to write a descriptive report of at least 150 words in approximately 20 minutes in response to a visual stimulus — a bar chart, line graph, pie chart, table, process diagram or map. Candidates must identify key features, make relevant comparisons, and present an accurate summary of the data. Crucially, they must include a clear overview paragraph and must never express a personal opinion. Task 1 contributes approximately one-third of the final IELTS Academic Writing band score.
At computerielts.com, every IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 practice test is delivered in a timed 20-minute environment with a live word counter and a crisp SVG chart rendered exactly as it would appear on a real IELTS computer-based test screen. Our AI evaluation tool generates a band score for each of the four criteria, checks for the presence and quality of the overview paragraph, verifies cited data against the chart, flags trend vocabulary that could be upgraded, identifies grammar errors with corrections, provides a Band 9 model introduction and overview, and creates a personalised three-step study plan tailored to your specific weaknesses.
